God brought you here today because it's a divine appointment for him to reignite the creative spark that's within you. And so today I want to teach you just a little bit of a process that I go through on a regular basis when I'm feeling kind of dry that God's taught me over the years that helps me reconnect with who he's created me to be and what he's created me to do. And I know that when you start practicing this in your studio, it's going to make all the difference. So let's jump in. Well, hey, my friend, I'm Matt Tommy. Welcome to my studio. It's not clean, but whose is, right? Listen, sometimes we just we get into the studio and we start uh wanting to create and it just feels like we're operating off of just a dry well. I don't know if you've ever felt that way before, but you know, as somebody that's been an artist, working artist for over 30 years now and a mentor to thousands of artists and just about every creative medium, this kind of feeling dry thing, maybe a creative block or whatever we want to call it, is a very, very common thing for artists to go through. And if we're not careful, the enemy can use it in our life to convince us of things like, oh, you're not supposed to be an artist, the season is over, you missed your best time, you know, all the all the stuff, right? That he tells us all the time to try to disconnect us from who God's created us to
Reigniting A Dry Creative Well
SPEAKER_00be. But the Lord started showing me uh just real simple things in my own life that if I'll do these, it really reconnects me to him and his creative nature inside of me. And so, just as a little bit of a foundation before I give you the process, here's what you really got to understand. God is not fickle. In other words, he doesn't come and go, come and go. He actually lives inside of you through the power of the Holy Spirit. In other words, he's not going anywhere, right? When Jesus died on the cross, restored all humanity to himself, the Holy Spirit came to live inside of us. And God invited us into this beautiful relationship with Father, Son, and Holy Spirit that is never ending and eternal. And so when you walk into the studio, that's your reality. The creative nature of God is living in you. It's not something that you got to beg for, it's not something that is here today and gone tomorrow. It's not something that you that is here when you feel it and not here when you don't. The the reality is God's presence and his creative nature, the very, the very nature that, the very spirit that raised Jesus from the dead, guess where it lives? It's living inside of you. And so the enemy is always trying to teach you and trick you into believing that somehow you're separate, right? That when you walk into your studio, you're selfish. You're you should be doing other things, you should be doing other things that are more spiritual, or you're not qualified, or you're not good enough, or this isn't the season, or did God really call you to do that?
God’s Presence Lives In You
SPEAKER_00All of that stuff, listen, it's all just a ploy to get you to agree with the lie of separateness. And if you can walk into the studio, even when you don't feel it, especially when you don't feel it, and you can say, Lord, even though I am not feeling it necessarily today, I'm gonna walk in here by faith and I'm gonna do the thing that I know you created me to do, which is be an artist. Listen, there's no greater way to glorify God than just to be the person that He's called you to be and do the thing that He's called you to do. And for us, that's being an artist. And so the first thing I would say is this when you walk into the studio and you're feeling a little dry and you're like, I got nothing, you know. The first thing I do is turn on some worship music. And I call this remember, right? Remember the deeds, the Bible says remember the deeds of the Lord, right? Remember how good he's been. Remember who he is, remember who he says you are in your life, right? This is why, you know, we talk a lot about this in the foundations portion of the Thriving Christian Artist Pathway. There's a link down at the bottom of this video if you want to find out more about that. But God's using it to transform so many artists all over the world. And here's the reason why it reconnects them with who God is, why he gave them their creative gifting and who he says you are according to his word. And listen, if you can create a space in your creative space, and I don't care if it's a studio like mine that's in a barn, or if it's on the back porch or in the garage or in a side bedroom, or maybe it's just on your dining room table or a comfy chair in your house, if you can choose when you walk in there to just remember, remember who God is, remember who he says I am, remember what he's called me to do, remember my design and create
Remember With Worship In Studio
SPEAKER_00an atmosphere. All of a sudden, what? Your mind begins to shift to focus on the goodness of God, his promises, his nature, his plans and purposes for you, rather than I don't have enough, I don't have any ideas, I don't know what I'm gonna do, I don't know if I'm good enough, blah, blah, blah, all the stuff, again, that the enemy is trying to get you to agree with. All right. The second thing is this, and again, this comes out of, if you know this channel, this comes right out of my journal time with the Lord. So this the second thing is this. I usually ask the Lord to show me when I'm in that kind of time with him, all right, reading his word, um, you know, being in worship, just kind of a moment. Sometimes I'm journaling, sometimes I'm listening for his voice. When I'm in that time and I'm feeling that blockage, usually I ask the Lord, Lord, is there anything, a mindset, a belief, a situation, a disappointment, um, the way I'm viewing something? Is there anything that's keeping me from being able to step into everything that you've got for me today? In other words, Lord, is there something that I'm holding on to that I need to release? And you know, not all the time, but sometimes there is. Sometimes there's a lingering disappointment. Sometimes there's a lie that we've believed, sometimes there's um a fear or a little bit of anxiety, sometimes it's just, you know, you don't feel great and you didn't sleep well. Whatever it is, ask the Holy Spirit to show you whatever it is that you're holding on to that you need to release. Because here's
Release What Blocks The Flow
SPEAKER_00the this is if the second thing is release, the third thing is then what? Receive. As you're releasing that thing to the Lord, right? Lord, I'm upset about this. Lord, I don't feel great today. Lord, this uh sickness that I've had is still lingering inside of me. God, I'm remembering that time where I didn't feel enough. Or Lord, I've had a string of disappointments and it's just it's gotten me down. Lord, I release those to you. Now, number three, Lord, what do you want me to receive? See, here's what I've learned. If your hands and your mind and your eyes are so full of disappointments and anxieties and fears and struggles and all the stuff, and you're focused on that all the time, you're carrying all this stuff around. Guess what? You don't have room to receive the thing that God's trying to put in your hand. And so as you're remembering who he is in his presence, releasing the things that he's showing you to release, then ask the Lord, say, Lord, what do you want me to receive? Lord, I've got open hands now, I've got an open heart. What do you want me to receive right now? And you know, he may give you a scripture, he may remind you of your calling, he may just encourage you and say, I love you. He may give you an idea. I can't tell you how many times I've come into this studio or in other studios I've had in the past. And God, in a
Receive Truth And Fresh Ideas
SPEAKER_00moment of worship, in a moment of connection with him, just boom, the solution I was looking for. Boom, the creative idea, boom, I get inspired by uh a tool or some materials or whatever it is. But he's giving me something in the place. In other words, as I'm releasing something that's been holding me back, he's giving me something to receive. And that is huge. And then the fourth thing is this respond. Whatever God shows you, just do it. And here's the deal for us as artists, when we respond, we're not just responding willy-nilly. We get to respond through the creative gift that God's given us. And so as you're processing something with the Lord, as you're giving thanks, as you're remembering who he is, get out your sketchbook. If you're a musician, get out your instrument. You know, if you're a poetry writer, uh begin to get out your journal, whatever it is, respond to the Lord in the moment through your creative expression. Why? Because your creative expression is a means of grace, it's a way that God has given you to not only express who he is, but to experience who he is. And so when you actually engage in the thing that God's called you to do in this moment, when you're remembering and reconnecting with who he is, when you're releasing things that don't belong to you, when you're receiving his goodness, and now you're responding through the very creative gift that God's given you. I'm telling you, friends, there's a power that happens with that. And listen, don't overcomplicate it.
Respond Through Your Art Practice
SPEAKER_00That doesn't mean that, okay, every time that I do this, God's gonna give me like this big prophetic download, like I'm gonna see a vision. Oh, and I have to get it exactly right. No, it may, I mean, for me, sometimes it means I'm coming in and I'm just, you know, puxing around with with materials and I'm dropping things as I'm recording this and I'm, you know, and I'm or I'm playing with tools or I'm sketching in my sketchbook, or um, you know, I'm just I'm looking for new ideas, whatever it is, right? I mean, I know a lot of artists that that begin um their studio time in the morning with a morning activation, just getting some paper out and just putting paint and color and line and sketch on on paper. Again, we're just responding. We're just priming the pump. We're just getting into what God's called us to do. Because listen, if you always wait for inspiration, uh you'll be waiting a long time. Sometimes you feel inspired, sometimes you don't. But it's when we can come in and walk by faith, right? When we can understand who God is in his presence, release the things that don't belong to us, receive the things that do, and then start engaging and responding to God in the context of our creative process. That's when we begin to hear the Lord. That's when we begin to see things differently. That's when grace is released, that's when new ideas flow. And guess what? All of a sudden, you start being a part of this divine creative process that God has invited you and I into. And that's what it's it's what it's all about. And that's when this whole thing begins to be so much fun and so life-giving and so transformative, not only to us, but also through us. I love this verse in the Bible and it talks about, I can't remember the exact verse right now. Maybe we'll be able to put it on the screen here. But but it's the verse that says, uh, you know, when Jesus is talking to the Pharisees, he says, I just do the things that I see the Father doing.
Faith Over Feelings In Creativity
SPEAKER_00You know, if we can just get in the habit as artists of just coming in, remembering who God is, right? Focusing on him, understanding who we are in Christ, releasing all the things that hold us back, receiving the good things that he has for us, and then responding in the way that he leads. My friend, listen, that is the recipe for a prophetic lifestyle, no matter what God's called you to, but especially for artists. Because that's how ideas, that's how artwork, that's how creative expression gets into the world, right? God speaks to us, it flows through us, and it flows through our hands. We see and agree with heaven and we release it into the earth through whatever it is that God's given us to do. But if we're all hung up all the time and holding all this other stuff that is blocking our ability to flow with the Lord, guess what? We're never able to do the thing that God's called us to do or be the person that God's called us to be. And see, I've just learned over the years in my own journey that if we'll do this, what starts to happen is there's this uncorking, if you will, there's this uncovering of the creative nature of God inside of us. When we release all of the stuff, when we get rid of all of the stuff that so easily entangles us, the Bible says, when we get rid of all the heavy things that we're we're holding that are literally blocking the nature of God inside of us, all of a sudden what? God can flow. God can show us how much he loves us, God can give us new ideas, God can flow with us in beautiful ways creatively. And that's the nature of the kingdom. That's supposed to be our normal every day. And my friend, I just want to say to you right now, if you are somebody who loves Jesus and you're trying your very best, but you just are way down in this disappointment after disappointment after disappointment, or you just feel like you're not enough, or you feel like the enemy is just at the door every time you come into the studio, and it's just gotten to the point where you don't even want to go in there anymore. I'm telling you, God wants to uncover himself in you today so that you can be reminded of who you are, reminded of who he is, and you can flow in every good work that he has for you. So listen, I want to pray for you because I believe God's gonna do an incredible work in you right now. And as you begin to employ this and use this in your studio on a regular basis, he wants to begin to make this a normal part of how you flow with him. So, Jesus, I thank you right now for my friend that's watching right now. God in the car, in the studio, in their house, wherever they might be. Lord, I thank you that you've called them as an artist. You created them in your image to create and to love beauty and art and life and creativity. And God, I pray today that you would help them to remember who you are and who you created them to be. God, would you reveal to them right now, just by the Holy Spirit, I just invite you, just close your eyes right now and ask him, Lord, just say, Lord, help me to remember who you are. Help me to remember what you've done. Help me to remember how you've created me. And now in that moment, as you're doing that, ask the Lord, say, Holy Spirit, is there anything that I'm holding on to? Is there anything that the enemy has put on my shoulders that I've been carrying that you didn't never design for me to carry? That I just need to
Guided Prayer For Artists
SPEAKER_00release to you right now. Ask him that. You may need to pause the video. That's totally fine. Just ask him that. Lord, is there anything that I need to release? And then once he shows you that, just release it to him. Just see yourself in your mind's eye, just like, Lord, I I give you this. I thank you that I don't have to carry this anymore. And then ask him, say, Lord, what do you want me to receive? What's your truth about this situation? What's your truth for today? And just ask him, say, Holy Spirit, the same way you showed me who you are, who I was, who I am, you know, the same way that you're show showing me uh what you want me to release. Lord, show me what you wanted me to receive today. Ask him that. He's a good father. He desires to give good gifts to his children. And then number three, listen, just respond. So, Lord, I pray right now for grace, grace upon grace, that as people get reacquainted with who you are, your goodness as a loving father, your your incredible, infinite, eternal, creative nature. God, I pray that that great grace and faith would rise up inside of them, God, that they'd be able to respond and do the thing that you've called them to do today, even when it doesn't make sense, even when it seems like it's a little too much for them, even though it seems like it may not be the next thing that makes sense in their mind. God, I thank you for grace to be able to step out and to respond. God, I pray for resources and relationships, favor, opportunity, divine appointments, supernatural encounters, God, with you for every person that's watching and listening to this right now, that your kingdom would come and your will would be done in them. In Jesus' name. Listen, my friend, if every day you'll just remember who he is, release the things that you're holding on to that don't belong to you, receive the things that he has for you, and then just start responding. I promise you, it will reconnect you to the life-giving creative spirit of God with inside of you that never left in the first place. All right. Hey, I love you, my friend.
