Ever felt too creative for church and too spiritual for the art world? We go straight to the tension and show why that ache points to design, not defect. Starting in Genesis, we trace how God first revealed himself through making—light, color, form, and beauty—and what that means for artists who wonder where they fit.

We unpack a biblical arc for creativity: image-bearing in Genesis, Spirit-filled artistry in Exodus with Bezalel, and new-creation identity in Christ. Along the way, we name the scripts many of us absorbed—art isn’t practical, creativity isn’t spiritual—and trade them for truth: God equips artists with wisdom, understanding, and skill to reveal his nature. When we create with God, art moves beyond self-expression into revelation, becoming a doorway where people encounter peace, wonder, and hope in places they didn’t expect.

You’ll hear practical encouragement on renewing your mind as a creative, discerning calling versus hobby, and embracing excellence as hospitality. We talk about studios turning into sanctuaries, songs steadying anxious hearts, designs dignifying communities, and stories awakening imagination the way Jesus’ parables do. Whether you paint, compose, write, design, film, or build, your gift isn’t random; it’s a primary way God longs to work in you and through you.

Why Creatives Feel Different

SPEAKER_00

Have you ever wondered why creative people often feel different from everyone else? I mean, maybe you love God deeply. Maybe you're wrestling, though, inside with questions like, does my creativity really matter to God? Or why did God even make me this way? Listen, a lot of creative people feel misunderstood, especially Christians, and especially in the church. But what if that difference that you feel isn't actually a bad difference? What if it's actually a part of God's design? Well, today I want to show you why God created creative people in the first place and what that means for your life, your calling, and the art that's inside of you. Well, hey, friend, I'm Matt Tommy. And every week here on the channel, I'm helping Christian creatives walk in clarity, confidence, and creative freedom in Christ so that you can create with God and reveal his glory in the world through your art. So if that sounds like something you want in your life and in your art, make sure that you hit the subscribe button. And also let me know in the comments where you are in the world and even what you do creatively. And I want to ask you something as we get started. Have you ever felt like I have? Maybe like your creativity didn't fit inside all of the boxes that people expected. Listen, if you do, trust me, you are not alone. And today I want to help you understand something really, really important for all of us artists who love Jesus. God didn't accidentally create creative people. He didn't. He actually did it on purpose. You know, over the years, I've talked to so many artists that I've mentored who've said something almost identical. They'll they'll say something like, Man, I feel like the odd man out, you know, everywhere I go. Or they'll say something like, you know, in the art world, I'm trying to sell my work and get out there, but people just don't understand my faith. And in church, people don't understand my creativity, like they're pulled in both directions. And then almost every time they'll say something like, I just wish I knew why God made me feel so different, why he made me this way. Listen, maybe you felt that way too, like you're living being pulled between two different worlds, too creative for some spaces and maybe too spiritual for others. But listen, here's again what I've discovered after mentoring thousands of artists all over the world and and also walking this journey myself. That that tension that you feel is often pointing directly to the design that God designed you with intentionally. And when you understand why God created creative people in the first place, everything starts to make a whole lot more sense. So I want to start with a really simple truth that a lot of Christians just overlook. Remember, God Himself is the original creator. In fact, in in Genesis 1:1, it says, What? In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. So I mean, just think about that for a minute. Before there was a sermon, before there was a choir or a worship team, before there was a church service, before there was ministry, there was a creator that was creating. In other words, God himself expressed himself through creativity the first time that he ever revealed himself to humanity. He used light and color and form and sound and beauty, all of that flowed directly out of his creative nature. And then Genesis tells us something that I think is pretty astonishing. It says that we were made in his image. So listen, that that means that creativity is not just random, it's not just talent. Creativity is one of the primary ways that humanity reflects and reveals the nature of God. And creative people often feel that reflection and that that desire to reveal more strongly than others. That pull to make something, to shape something, to express something beautiful with our lips or our minds or our hands. But but listen, that desire to create didn't just come from nowhere. It's not you being selfish, it's not you being self-absorbed. Listen, my friend, that is God's nature echoing and resonating inside of you. And here's something I think is really interesting. The Bible begins with a creator creating, but then later in Exodus, what? We see God filling an artist named Bezalel with his spirit to create beauty inside the tabernacle. And then in the New Testament, Paul tells us that in Christ we become what? A new creation, and the spirit of God now lives inside of us. In other words, I think this is so cool. From Genesis all the way through Jesus, the story of the Bible shows us something that's really, really incredible. This creator, God that created us, places his spirit inside people, you and me, so that we can reveal his beauty to the world. And again, creative people, we often feel that invitation, that desire to create more strongly than most. And when this happens, art becomes more than just self-expression. It literally becomes the reflection and the revealing of heaven, the nature of God and the earth. But listen, that raises kind of an important question. If creativity reflects and reveals God, why in the world do so many creative people struggle with things like doubt and insecurity and feeling like they don't belong? Well, for one reason, I mean, creative people are often wired to notice things that others miss, right? We we see beauty in ordinary places, we feel things really deeply. We imagine possibilities that other people just kind of overlook. We sense stories and just simple moments, right? And and sometimes that sensitivity can absolutely feel like a burden. I mean, maybe you grew up hearing things like I did, like art isn't practical or focus on something real, you know, get a real job. Artists can't make a living from their art or, you know, creativity isn't really spiritual. That's not a way that you can serve God. Listen, maybe nobody said those things out loud, but if you're like me, you probably still felt like your creativity and your creative heart didn't quite fit. And listen, if you heard those things, here's what I really want you to understand. All throughout scripture, God intentionally chose who? Creative people to reveal his purposes. When God wanted to build the tabernacle, who'd he choose? He didn't disappoint leaders, he raised up artists, a whole bunch of them. In fact, Exodus 31 tells us about Bezalel and the Holy Ab and all the other company of artists. It says, I filled him with the spirit of God and with wisdom and understanding and skill for every kind of artistic work. I mean, listen, I just think this is so cool. God didn't just give him the practical skill that he needed, he filled him with his Holy Spirit to create, which I think is a huge clue for us, right? It says something really powerful. Creative people are often designed to see things before others do, right? Beauty and possibility and meaning and hope. And when we create, those things that were in the invisible all of a sudden become visible because God's nature is flowing through it. But here's the challenge. So many artists have never been discipled in how to think about their creativity from a biblical perspective. They love God, they maybe feel even called to create, but they're still battling these lies about their identity and their worth and whether their creativity really even belongs in the kingdom, whether it's even important to God. And listen, honestly, that's why I created my foundations course. It's designed to help Christian creatives renew their mind, overcome fear and insecurity and all that other junk that holds us back, and really start understanding identity and calling as an artist in Christ. Listen, if that sounds like something that you need in your life right now, I'll put a link below right here in the video so that you can check out the foundations course. I promise you, it's one of the best places that you can start if you want to build a strong spiritual foundation for your creative life. But there's another reason, too, that God created creative people that most Christians have never even thought about. And when you start seeing this, it changes the way you think about your art and your creative expression forever. See, throughout history, art has been one of the primary ways that people experience the presence of God. I mean, I mean, think about it. It's your church in conferences and retreats, all throughout history, music has been used to open hearts, paintings reveal beauty, sculptures evoke awe and wonders, stories, even Jesus used story to awaken imagination and connect people's hearts. Listen, creative expression has always been one of the primary ways that God brings heaven to touch earth. And when creative people partner with God in that creative process, our work becomes more than just decoration or extra. It becomes revelation. It becomes this doorway where when somebody suddenly feels hope or peace or wonder again, that's God moving. It becomes a table where God sits down with a person and communes with them in a beautiful and thoughtful way. Listen, I love it when people encounter God in places that they never expected, right? Through a painting or a song or a play or a story or a sculpture. But listen, here's the surprising part: God designed creativity to work that way. This is not, again, some accident. But there's one more reason that he created creative people that might just be the most important of all. Now, right now, I know some of you may be thinking, well, okay, Matt, you know, what does all this actually mean for my art and my creativity? I mean, am I supposed to just make art for myself or enjoy it as a hobby? Or is there actually a calling from God attached to this creativity that you're saying that God put inside of me? Listen, that one question will change everything for you because when you understand this next truth that I'm going to share, you stop seeing your creativity as just a hobby and you start seeing it as a part of your kingdom assignment. You know, I love it in Ephesians 2.10, I believe, is where it says, we are God's workmanship created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. That one word, I love it, workmanship right there, it comes from the Greek word poema. It's actually where we get the word poem from. In other words, your life, your creativity is meant to be a creative expression of God's grace in the earth to others. And so as you're watching right now, you you gotta realize this creativity that's in your heart, it is not random. It's a big primary part of the way that God wants to move in your life and through your life. And listen, that might be painting or or music, maybe you're writing a book, or maybe you're into design or photography or architecture or or filmmaking or a hundred other forms of creativity. But listen, the point is this God didn't accidentally make you a creative or make you an artist. He made you that way. He made me that way on purpose. Listen, let me let me ask you something. Do you ever feel like your creativity is more than a hobby? Like there's actually a calling connected to it, or is this maybe the first time? Listen, let me know down in the comments if this is the first time you're hearing this or whether this has been something that's rumbling inside of you for a long time. I'd love to see how many of you are starting to feel this way and really resonate with this idea that your creativity is a calling from God. Now, listen, before we wrap this up, I want to say something to you from my heart. If you're a Christian creative who loves Jesus, but you've been wondering whether your creativity really has a place in God's kingdom, I want to let you know something.
