Speaker 1:

that creative tug inside your heart, that whisper that's always going on inside, that's drawing you to certain artistic things. What if that isn't just you, but it's actually a clue to the God-given superpower that he's given you in your art? Well, today I'm going to teach you how to recognize that, how to embrace it in your life and actually how to start walking in it as a part of God's grace, not only in your life, but through your life. Today, on the Thriving Christian Artist. All over the world, artists are awakening Painters and potters, writers and weavers, poets and dancers not chasing followers or fame, but sons and daughters called for such a time as this, transformed from the inside out, creating with purpose, releasing the glory of God and living in the power of the kingdom. Right now, this is the Thriving Christian Artist. Well, hey, my friend, I'm Matt Tommey, so glad that you are here. On the Thriving Christian Artist. Whether it's your first time, first time in a long time, or maybe you're a regular listener and watcher, I'm really, really glad that you're here. Really glad that you're here. Listen, uncovering this artistic superpower that God gives all of us as artists is really foundational to how we show up in the world and how we worship God through our art and how God uses us in the world to release his glory. And I can just remember when I started really getting in touch with what I'm calling today this artistic superpower this, you know, we call it a lot of times, this artistic superpower. This, you know, we call it a lot of times your unique artistic voice. Man, when you start getting really excited about this and really in touch with it, it really frees you up to be fully who God created you to be and release what he's created you to do.

Speaker 1:

Because I don't know about you, but for a lot of artists, for myself, for many, many years, I constantly struggled with this idea of I'm not good enough, or nobody will like the things that I like, or I'm kind of weird, or other people are more talented, or what if nobody wants to buy this? What if it doesn't really matter? I mean, can I just, can we just all recognize really quick that the job of the enemy, from the very forming of the dawn of creation, has been to do what? To steal and to kill and destroy and to distract and to derail, and try to convince you that the thing that God's put inside of you is not worth pursuing, it's not worth uncovering, it's not worth developing. And just like you, you know I've struggled with that for a lot of years until I started realizing that the very things that I thought made me weird, the very things that I thought you know, and the things that the enemy was attacking in my life, the things that I downplayed in my life, they were actually gifts from God. Now it's interesting.

Speaker 1:

I wrote a lot about this in my book, god's Plan for Living. It may be helpful for you for a next step, but I write in there that God gives us three things, I think every person that comes on board with who we are as kingdom people. He gives us gifts that is, supernatural gifts to be able to release his spirit into the world. He gives us talents, right, and he gives us talents to be able to do things that maybe other people can't do. You may be talented in music, you may be talented in painting and drawing and writing and sculpture and movement and whatever it is, but you've just got sort of a natural ability, maybe in seed form, sure, but you've got a talent there that comes easy to you. That kind of flows naturally.

Speaker 1:

And then I also talk about this idea that I believe God gives us graces and that what I think about as a grace is this supernatural ability to do things and be in places and operate within a realm that other people don't necessarily have a grace for. I think about some of my friends who are abstract expressionist painters. You know they love the power and the imagery and the you know energy of moving fast and painting with big swaths of color and that sort of thing. I'm not really as drawn to that. I love sort of the meditative nature of weaving and sculpting and creating detail and that sort of thing. Well, guess what? They got a grace for that and I've got a grace for this. Neither one is more the Lord or not as much the Lord, but we have a different grace.

Speaker 1:

And so when you start realizing that on board, god has given you gifts, that is, those supernatural abilities to see and hear. With him he's giving you talents, things to do with your hands, with your body, artistically. And then, number three, he's giving you grace to be able to operate within the realm and in the world, whichever it is that you're operating in artistically. That's all God's design. And of course, you know I love to start everything with scripture. So I want to go to Romans 12, 6.

Speaker 1:

And in the New Living, I love what it says. It says in his grace, talking about God. Right, in his grace, god has given us different gifts for doing certain things well, gifts for doing certain things well. See, these things that are unique to us, that the enemy is always trying to downplay and distract us from and get us to be deflated in our belief toward. These are the gifts of God inside of us. These are the presents, if you will, these are the secrets of the kingdom, if you will, that god has has put with inside of us. And I love, you know, I love that verse that says it's the glory of god to conceal the matters, the glory of kings to search it out.

Speaker 1:

And I just really believe there are some things that god's given you artistically and creatively that you're never going to realize. Listen now, you're never going to realize. And see, until you start digging for it. See, if you're never going to realize, listen now, you're never going to realize until you start digging for it. See, if you're just waiting for everything, just to kind of flow. I can just tell you a hundred percent, that's not always how it happens.

Speaker 1:

Most of the things that I've discovered in my life artistically that are really gifts to me. They came as I leaned into the process, as I got out that Holy Spirit pickaxe in my artistic process and I started going after something, realizing that what there's an itch inside of me, there's a desire inside of me, there's a feeling inside, there's something that's drawing me to this subject, this material, this world, these colors, these forms, these structures. There's something that's drawing me to that Right. It's the glory of God to conceal a matter. And when I start searching it out, when I start going for it, when I start giving myself time and space and energy to play and to develop mastery within those things, guess what begins to happen All of a sudden? The emergence of a unique voice and, I believe, a unique emergence of this superpower, this superpower that God gives all of us individually to be able to see and agree with heaven, to hear his voice and to respond to him in ways and through mediums and through metaphors that nobody else is doing.

Speaker 1:

Now you may be saying, you know, for the skeptic out there, you may be saying, well, you know, I mean everybody can't be unique. I mean there's going to be some overlap, matt. I mean, not everybody's going to have a unique thing. Have you looked at the uniqueness of creation? Have you looked at the uniqueness of snowflakes? Have you looked at the uniqueness of animals and colors and textures, and rocks and the sky and the stars in the heaven?

Speaker 1:

My friend God is infinite in his ability to reflect his nature in ways that are unique and he's created us at the height of creation. The Bible says you know, we're an image. We get to be image bearers. Right, he created us in his image in order to what created us in his image, in order to what? To reflect and reveal his image in the earth, to release his light and life in the earth, not only through the way that we live and that we speak, but, of course, through the way that we create.

Speaker 1:

And so when you start realizing that, wow, the things that I'm drawn to, even if you can't explain why. It's not random, it's the whisper of God, it's the divine spark of God. That is this flicker, this whisper inside of you and if you'll slow down enough to listen for it and then to embrace it, have you ever seen anybody? I was a Boy Scout. You have to forgive me. Have you ever seen anybody? I was a boy scout, you have to forgive me. Have you ever seen anybody start a fire with just a couple of sticks? It's really really cool. And it happens through friction, right.

Speaker 1:

But what happens when you're you know, sometimes you take a shoelace or some kind of cord or whatever. You create a bow and you have a little piece of wood down here and you put it on there and you start going like this and all of a sudden, before long, there'll be a little smoke. That happens. And then out of that smoke you'll take it off and you'll look down into the wood and all of a sudden there'll be just a glimmer, just a little fleck, just a little fleck of fire, a coal, if you will. And what you do typically is you take that coal and you drop it over into some people call it a nest. Right, we used to call it a nest. You just take a nest of dried, kindling-y sort of straw, whatever you can grab that's super dry. You take that little ember, that little fleck of an ember, and you drop it into that nest and you put your hands up and you go and you start to blow on it and you're and you're coddling it and you're so careful with your you start blowing it. But what? All of a sudden, that little fleck of a coal, that little, that thing, that was just a spark, all of a sudden, really in a moment, begins to. There's some, there's some smoke, and then all of a sudden there's, there's a flame. There's a flame, and you can use that then to do what? Typically you would take that over to the campfire and put that under some kindling and that's how you start your fire.

Speaker 1:

My friend, listen, the creative discovery process of the unique voice and the unique elements, the unique desires and passions that God's put inside of you, can I tell you it's just the same. It's just the same. It takes you listening for the whispers of God. It takes you listening for the whispers of God. It takes you looking for the little embers of spark that are there. I can remember. I'm getting excited. I hope you're excited. I'm a total nerd when it comes to this, but I can remember.

Speaker 1:

I remember when I would walk in the woods as a kid, as a young teen and as an older teen, even in a college. I remember working at summer camps and a mentor of mine, bob Cagle, one of the things he used to have us do is we would have to walk in the woods as camp counselors. We have to walk in the woods and we have to find something in nature that reflected our relationship with God. We have to walk in the woods and we have to find something in nature that reflected our relationship with God and we have to bring it back to the circle and kind of talk about this. I mean, it was such a beautiful exercise in the development of metaphor for an emerging artist, you know. But I can remember walking through the woods.

Speaker 1:

In all of these times over my life, and even as an adult, even when I didn't know it in my cognitive mind, I knew that when I was in the woods, man, something spoke to me, something was lighting me up. I've said it before. I was more me there than at any other time. Why? That was a whisper. That was God whispering to me. He was saying, matt, I made you for this, matt. I made you to come alive when you're in nature, matt. I made your eyes to see the cragginess of a creek and the way rocks come together. I made your hands to feel the way nests are made by birds. I made your body to feel the breeze and your ears to hear the way birds singing. And I made all of that to light you up on the inside. Why so that such desire come on somebody? So that such desire would be birthed inside of you that you could not help but create out of that place.

Speaker 1:

Listen, my friend, if you're not creating out of that place of desire and passion and being awakened spiritually, can I just say you're missing the whole point. You're. You're missing the whole gift of god in in the creative process. This is the way that we were designed to create, not out of just following rules and techniques and materials and just doing the same old thing, that that we've learned in school or in lessons or whatever. No, all those things are great and it's wonderful to learn the rules right. As the old saying goes, you have to learn the rules to break the rules right. That's a wonderful thing to do. We need to grow in maturity as artists, but I'm telling you none of that. No technique or material or class or mastery in anything artistic is worth anything unless it is fueled by the passion and the movement of the Holy Spirit inside of you.

Speaker 1:

That's how we're designed to create, and so I would ask you, even as you're listening, as you're watching this today, I would ask you when have you recently felt the most alive, creatively, even back through your life? What are the things that you're drawn to and you just can't explain it? What are the things that make you laugh? What are the things that make you cry? What are the things that just make you feel so full inside that you could just sit there for hours and hours and hours doing that, seeing that, hearing that, feeling that, engaging with it. What is that? I'm telling you, that is a secret, that's a whisper, that's a spark. It's a clue to the superpower that God has for you. Because I'm telling you, when you begin to get in touch with that, you don't have to know all the details of how it's going to work out. Can I just say to all of you that are out there wanting to perfectionistic uh, you know, perfectionistically plan out your whole creative process for the next 10 years. Listen, you don't have to plan it out.

Speaker 1:

Art, art, creating art is about process, it's not about product, right? Of course we want to create beautiful products for ourselves, for God, for for others. We want to create them for the marketplace, if that's what God's called you to. But I'm telling you, the gift is not always in the product. The gift is in the process, and if you can get passionate about what's lighting you up and get clear about what's lighting you up artistically, then you can trust God in the process to see that thing developed. So I like to call that decoding your artistic DNA right, once you start to understand what is the DNA that God's put inside of you, then you can kind of start to decode it.

Speaker 1:

What is this? Hmm, okay, I love nature. I love the way things happen together. I love the way nests and pods and branches and colors. I love the way things work in nature. I love the relation. I love the textures. I love the forms. I love the differences in textures and different materials. I love how nests look against branches, look against rocks. I love how greens and browns look against blues and whites. Like what does that mean? Like what? And so I start to decode and I start to try to figure out.

Speaker 1:

What are these things? What are those things for you? Like? What are the stories and themes that keep showing up in your art? What are the subjects that you keep daydreaming about expressing in your work, what are the mediums and techniques that are just fascinating you that you can't, you know, get off your mind? I would encourage you write down those things Even right now. If you've got a, maybe you're in the studio, maybe you're creating right now. I know a lot of people listen to this, watch this in the studio. Grab your sketchbook, write down four or five things. What are the things that you just keep going back to, the things that maybe it's easy to think about this, the threads, if you will, that are going through your work, the themes that are going through your work?

Speaker 1:

Listen, god not only has formed those things in you, but he wants to form those things through your art. I love that verse. It's a set of verses in Psalm 139. It says for you formed me. This is David talking. You formed me in my inward parts. You covered me in my mother's womb. I'll praise you for I'm fearfully and wonderfully made. Marvelous are your works and that my soul knows very well. Listen, just like God covered you with his spirit and he formed you in his mother's womb, just like he covered the earth with his spirit on the day of creation and formed the earth. Listen, I'm telling you, god wants to cover you with his spirit in the studio as you form with him the things that God wants to create through you. Now I'm not saying that as you're going to be a robot and God's just going to do all the work. No, this is this beautiful co-laboring right, this beautiful trust process that happens when we start to actually receive the impulses and the passions and the things that light us up as gifts from the Lord and we begin to trust that the creative intuitions that we're feeling in that process, as we're inviting him into that process of creation, these are not antithetical to the process. This is not me over here and God over there. No, this is us working together.

Speaker 1:

If you listen to me at all or read any of my books, you know that I'm passionate about this idea of creating from a place of assumed connection. When you got saved, all of you got saved. Your imagination has been redeemed, your mind has been redeemed, your eyes have been redeemed, your heart has been redeemed. And your creative impulses and desires Guess what? They have been redeemed. And they not only have been redeemed, they're being matured as you learn To walk with the Lord and step out In the, the creative process and actually decode this creative voice, this creative DNA that God has put inside of you. Now can I just tell you real quick this is one of those things in the kingdom that God does with you, not to you. I can hear some of you right now because I know everybody's done it. Oh God, just download my creative voice. Oh God, I just need to download. I just need you to do this, lord, I'd receive it.

Speaker 1:

Well, listen, we receive it by faith. But part of faith is not only seeing it and agreeing with it, but what? Decreeing it out of your mouth and proceeding with it with your feet and with your hands. In other words, when God shows me something and I agree with it in my heart, I got to begin to speak that thing out of my mouth. Why? Because the power of the life and death is where, in the tongue, in your mouth. So, as you speak it out, you co-labor with the creative process and power of God inside of you and then you begin to proceed. That is, you begin to act as if and do as if the things which God shows you in the spirit, the things which you've agreed with in your heart, the things which you're saying you believe, you actually start acting as if those things are true. That's how faith begins to happen.

Speaker 1:

Everything that we do artistically is done by faith, right? Every idea starts where In the imagination, and I would say, for believing, it starts in the spirit, right, god's showing us things and we agree with it, and then, based on that, we begin to act on those impulses. That's how the creative process works and that's how you mature in the creative process. So this is not something don't, don't go away from this today and go oh, yeah, god, I want that creative superpower. Just give it to me. Oh, I receive it. Well, listen, receive it, but you got to start receiving it day by day, moment by moment, and as you receive it, use it. As you receive it, walk in it. That's how the thing starts flowing in your life. All right, see, that's that's what we talk about in this, this idea of cultivate, right. Cultivation, that's how you get the, the spark, if you will. The spark, the little ember, that's how you get that into a flame.

Speaker 1:

So what does that mean? Well, that means that you got to make regular time in the studio. You know, every day, every day, yeah, every day, aren't you an artist? Listen, I've said this a million times I I'll say it again. It's worth repeating. If God found it important enough to place a creative gift and passion and calling inside of you and on your life, it ought to be important enough for you to do something with it every day. Now, if you need help with that man, we got tons of resources. I mean, if you don't have your core four planner yet, get that. I mean it's a day by day. We help you connect with God, clarify what you're doing, create with him, cultivate relationships that matter. Listen, that's just a part of the rhythm that we believe that kingdom artists are a part of every day.

Speaker 1:

Make time to create, make time to experiment and play, not just creating for a show. You know I'm all for creating for shows. I've helped thousands upon thousands of artists in our Created to Thrive Artist Mentoring Program turn their art hobby into a thriving business. I've been doing that for years. We're the number one creative mentoring program for artists who love Jesus in the world have been for many, many years. All right, tons and tons and tons, many years. All right, tons and tons and tons of testimonials. All right, but I tell artists all the time you cannot create only for production. You've got to create out of the place of play. Why? Because play and fun and experimenting that's what lights up our heart.

Speaker 1:

You got to create things when you don't feel ready, when you know you're going to mess up, when you're sure you don't have the technique that you need to get in there and make a mess. Why? Because that's when things happen, that's when God, god, wakes us up. You also need to get. You need to get feedback right In safe communities, people that you respect. That's one of the things we love doing in the mentoring program. Every communities, people that you respect that's one of the things we love doing in the mentoring program. Every, every month, we do art critiques. People submit their work, my me and my coaching team we get together and and we critique and we give thoughtful feedback and help people grow. We need that, all of us. All of us need that. But that's how. That's how that art ember and those sparks become a flame.

Speaker 1:

So I'd say for you this week, is it starting a studio practice of showing up in the studio every day? Listen, I don't even care if it's for 30 minutes Every day. Do something with your art, or maybe it's for you this week. You need to set aside the commission, set aside the production work for a day or for a morning, and just say you know what? I'm going to try something this week. That's been on my heart, that's been on my radar creatively for a little while, but I've not done anything with it. I'm just going to play and see what happens. Listen, I just want to tell you that's valuable, that's a part of you being a good steward of what God has given you and as you do that, guess what. That's a part of you being a good steward of what God has given you. And as you do that, guess what that's going to bloom and that's going to blossom.

Speaker 1:

Now here's the last thing I want to say when God gives you this superpower and you begin to develop it, it begins to become your unique creative voice, not just for you, not just as a means of grace for your own life, because I may be, you know, as we create, as we do the thing God's called us to do, it, it is a means of grace for us, right? It is a way, a beautiful way, that we are able to walk in the abundant life and experience the presence of God. Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, but it isn't just for you and it isn't just for me. It's made to be a means of grace for others, a vessel of God's love and his beauty and truth and goodness and grace to others. That people would not only see our life but see our work and be able to interact with and engage with the life giving presence of God in their life. That's how the kingdom happens.

Speaker 1:

Listen, it's just like you know, you ever thrown a rock in the water and you throw that rock and all of a sudden it could just make one hole. But no, it doesn't make just one hole in the in the water. It didn't just sink to the bottom, it makes ripples and ripples and ripples and ripples and ripples. And listen, that's what happens when you create your work and you're brave enough to put it out on social media or at a show or on your website, or you give it away as a gift or as a prophetic offering, or you sell it. What begins to happen is this ripple effect, not just of the product itself, listen, but of this unique artistic superpower that God's given you, this unique artistic superpower that God's given you. The effect of that, the power of that, is a ripple effect all across the world.

Speaker 1:

Listen, I don't know about you, but I don't want to just see my work end up in somebody's house and that's just it. I want them, every time they walk by that piece, to go wow, something about this piece just makes me want to pause and take a deep breath. Something about when I when I read that book, when I listened to that song, when I see that piece of art, when I watched that movie, when I uh, whatever it is creatively that you do, when I do that, I experienced the life and light of God. My friend, listen, that's the kingdom. That's why God gave you the thing that he gave you. That's why we got to give time every day to this unique, beautiful gift that God's given us, because it's through us doing that that his kingdom is released uniquely and powerfully, not only for us, but through us. Listen, maybe this is a great way to end today.

Speaker 1:

Matthew 5, 14 through 16,. It says this in the message. I love the message. It says here's another way to put it You're here to be light, bringing out the God colors in the world. Isn't that great? God is not a secret to be kept. We're going public with this as public as a city on a hill. If I make you light bearers, don't you think I'm going to you? Don't think I'm going to hide you under a bucket, do you? I'm putting you as a light on a stand.

Speaker 1:

Now that I've put you there on a hilltop, on a light stand, shine. This is Jesus talking. He said listen, I gave you this thing, shine. I gave you this thing. Share it with the world. Right. Keep open house, be generous with your lives. By opening up to others, you'll prompt people to be open with God, this generous father in heaven.

Speaker 1:

Whoa. This is the thing. This is the gift that God's given us to be able to wake up people to the fact that God loves them, that God has a plan and a purpose for their life, that God wants to engage with them and meet them right where they are. This is the kingdom and, my friend, you and I get to be a part of it as artists. You and I get to be a part of it as creative people who are seeing and agreeing with heaven, who are decreeing his truth out of our mouth and proceeding with it into the studio and into the marketplace every day. This is what you and I were created for. So, my friend, listen to those God whispers that make your soul awake. So, my friend, listen to those God whispers that make your soul awake. Do the work that it takes to decode that artistic DNA inside of you. Watch how you can follow the leading of the Spirit to cultivate that spark into a superpower Through faithful practice and trust God, believe God, declare out of your mouth that the superpower that God has given you is going to ripple and ripple and ripple and ripple through the lives of people in countless generations, because you and I chose to say yes.

Speaker 1:

Now, listen, I know that, as you're listening to this and you're watching this, you're probably thinking I would love to be able to do that, but I just the enemy's hitting me at every turn. I'm feeling, maybe, like I want to shrink back, like I'm always comparing myself to others. I've got all this doubt in my head. Like man, I want to, like I believe, but help my unbelief. Can I just tell you that the very fact that you're feeling that is proof that you're on the right path, because the enemy doesn't attack people that are not walking into and toward the very promised land that God created them for. So can I just tell you that the difficulties that you're feeling right now are proof, are proof that there's a gift in you. They're proof that God's got a plan and a purpose for your life. They're proof that all these things that you've been down all these years, they're proof that those are actually the very things you need to be focused on. That's actually the path you need to be walking on.

Speaker 1:

And so, father, right now, I pray in Jesus' name, by the Holy Spirit. God, I thank you that you don't know any distance. I thank you that you don't know any distance. I thank you that you're outside of time. And so, god, whenever somebody's watching this and listening to this Lord, I thank you that you're present right there in that moment to do the work that only you can do.

Speaker 1:

And, father, I pray in Jesus' name that you would break the power of the enemy right now, in Jesus' name, over their minds and over their hearts. Holy Spirit, I pray that you would bring up areas of agreement in my friend's heart where they've agreed with the lies of the enemy. And, god, show them your truth right now, even in this moment, that they could come out of agreement with the lies of the enemy and into agreement with the truth of your word, the truth of your promises, the truth of your design for their life, that they might walk in every good thing that you have for them. I bless them. I bless them, my friend, look, I bless you right now with ears to hear, with eyes to see, with a heart to receive, with hands to do the work, with feet to walk. I bless you with those things that you can experience, every good thing that God has for you. In Jesus' name.

Speaker 1:

In Jesus' name, listen, if you, like most artists, want to walk into this new reality, but you know that there's a whole lot of stuff hanging on and hanging out and hanging inside of you from all these years maybe trauma, maybe doubt, maybe fear, maybe just some. You know, as the old saying goes stinking thinking. Maybe just some old patterns that you've gotten into that you know, as the old saying goes stinking thinking. Maybe just some old patterns that you've gotten into that you know you need to break, but it's just hard to do it by yourself. Can I tell you? That's exactly why I developed the Foundations Course.

Speaker 1:

The Created to Thrive Foundations Course is a nine-week journey where I walk you through this process of everything that we just talked about today learning to hear God's voice, learning to receive a clear understanding of God's unique design on your life, not only just as an artist generally, but as a child of God. What are the things that he's called you to? How to get a clear vision for your life so that you could walk in clarity and in boldness and in confidence toward the things that God's called you to do, and not only give you a vision for that, but actually give you clear steps and habits on how to come out of agreement with the things that the enemy's had you agreeing with all these years and into agreement with the fullness of what God has for you. Listen, you can find out all about the Foundations course. Out all about the Foundations course.

Speaker 1:

Hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of artists all over the world and just about every creative medium are experiencing new life in Jesus and a renewed sense of self and a renewed sense of joy and confidence, because they're allowing me to walk them through this course in the context of community. You can find out all about it right here. The link is in the show notes. You just go to matttommymentoringcom forward slash foundations or you just go to our website. Find it on the link or click the link that's in the show notes.

Speaker 1:

However, you want to do it, listen, my friend, just do it. Just do it. I promise you we've made it as affordable as we can for every artist, no matter what your financial situation is, and I can trust you. You can trust and I can promise you that you have spent a whole lot more money on a whole lot more things. They brought you a whole lot less. Listen, the Foundations course is proving to be an incredible vehicle of transformation in the lives of so many. I'd love for you to be a part of it. Give me the privilege of continuing to walk with you inside that community.

Speaker 1:

All right, well, hey, friend. Oh yeah, one more thing. Like I said, I don't want to just pass it by. If you don't have your core four planner yet, your core four focus planner, you need to get this. It's like, again, a no brainer. Every day, we're giving you, step by step, not only encouraging quotes and scriptures, but also a daily rhythm for you to be able to connect with the Lord, clarify what you're doing every day, create with him and cultivate the relationships that matter, all within the context of your 90 day plan. We're going to help you set those goals, get clarified in what God's called you to do, the foundations course, the core, core 4 Planner they go beautifully together and it's just a clear and simple way, just another way that we're helping you walk in everything that God's got for you.
