Breaking Free from Sin Consciousness
What's holding you back as a Christian artist? For many believers, the greatest barrier isn't lack of skill or opportunity—it's an internal battle between what Matt Tommey calls "sin consciousness" and "sonship consciousness."
Drawing from the transformative work happening in the Foundations course, Matt explores how our internal focus shapes everything in our lives. When we fixate on our failures, shortcomings, and perceived inadequacies, we create a world of limitation. But when we shift our focus to our identity as beloved children of God, everything changes—including our art.
Through a series of penetrating questions, Matt helps us examine whether we're living from a place of fear or freedom, duty or delight, hesitation or confidence. Are you beating yourself up because of unwanted thoughts? Do you approach God primarily with apologies rather than gratitude? Do you feel unworthy of God's blessing in your creative life? These indicators reveal whether we're truly walking in the freedom Christ purchased for us.
The good news is transformation is possible. God never leads us to condemnation—only illumination. By recognizing areas where sin consciousness has infiltrated our thinking, we can begin renewing our minds and embracing our true identity as artists in God's kingdom. This shift isn't just about feeling better—it's about experiencing lasting change that impacts every area of our lives, especially our creative expression.
Ready to experience this transformation yourself? Matt offers podcast listeners exclusive access to the Foundations course at 75% off the regular price—a nine-week journey proven to unlock the hearts of artists and build the confidence needed to thrive. Your Father delights in you and your creativity. Will you take the next step toward embracing that truth?

Welcome to the Thriving Christian Artist, the podcast, where we hope you connect with God to bust through the roadblocks that have held you back for years, create the work you love and really live the life you know. God created you to live as an artist in His kingdom. I'm Matt Tama, your host. Let's get started. Well, hey there, my friend, Really glad that you're here with me on the podcast today. You know, the last nine weeks have been absolutely incredible. We took a big cohort, several hundred artists, through our brand new foundations course and the results have been absolutely mind-blowing Our team. Every time we get an email or read a Facebook message, we're just like oh my gosh. This is so incredible to see real, lasting transformation start happening in people's lives, no matter how old they are, no matter if they're doing their art as a hobby or as a form of just fun and spiritual processing, or whether they're actually trying to build a part-time or full-time business.
Speaker 1:We have seen God do some incredible, incredible things in this Foundations course and it really has spurred a lot of thought. You may have been following me on Facebook and seen a lot of the posts that I've been making lately, but I made a post today that I wanted to share because I've just felt like it was so important for all of us. And it really is just a small piece of the type of things that we talk about inside of Foundations, because our Foundations course is really all about piece of the type of things that we talk about inside of foundations, because our foundations course is really all about getting to the core of what's going on in your heart and what's going on in your mind so that we can allow the Holy Spirit to heal the broken places in our heart, clear the way, clear the roadblocks that are standing in our way and allow us to really start walking in confidence in everything that God's called us to. And one of the things that I know has had a big, big effect on the lives, especially believers who are artists, is this idea of what I call sin consciousness versus sonship consciousness. You know you may have realized at this point in your life that whatever you focus on internally tends to grow in your perception of it. Right, it grows and expands and it it kind of sets the stage for what's going in your life again, first internally and then externally.
Speaker 1:You may have heard me say before you know, the thoughts that we dwell on, create the world that we dwell in, and that is is just so, so important. And it really begs the case of why it's so vitally important for every believer, artist or not, to intentionally guard our hearts and direct our hearts and mind in the way that is focused not on our surroundings, not on the bad things or crazy things that are going on in our life, but focus on our new life in Christ and walking in the fullness of the kingdom that Jesus restored us to as sons and daughters. But here's the deal Many believers focus in their heart on a sin consciousness, that is, they're thinking more about what they're doing wrong, how they've disappointed God, how they didn't measure up all this kind of stuff, and it's just. I think it happens not because they're trying to do it intentionally or whatever, but really it's more of a lingering effect. I think of never being taught what the kingdom of God is all about, Never being taught what it means to walk as a son, as a daughter, to be fully restored, what it means to actually be able to renew your mind, not as a one-time event at the altar, but as an ongoing process for the Lord. And so I wrote some questions. I think that will help you start to just give a quick summary in your mind, just a quick assessment, if you will, of am I walking in sin consciousness or am I walking in sonship consciousness, consciousness of being a child of God? And you know, obviously this isn't exhaustive, but I hope this is going to prick your mind and help you start shifting the focus onto who you are, as a new creation in Christ, versus that old person that was done away with at the moment of salvation. You became a new creation. The Bible says old things have passed away and behold, all things have become new.
Speaker 1:And so just a few questions around, maybe, mindset. Do you regularly beat yourself up because of thoughts that you have, believing that they're a result of you being a bad person? When you make a mistake, is the first thing that you think about oh gosh, I've disappointed God or I've got to run from God, rather than learning how to grow from that experience? Do you see yourself primarily, as you know, as the old song says, a sinner saved by grace versus a son or a daughter empowered by God's grace? Are your thoughts more consumed with avoiding sin rather than pursuing God's kingdom purposes and being all that he's called you to be.
Speaker 1:What about things around provision? You know resources and relationships and opportunities maybe finances. Do you feel regularly not worthy of God's blessing in your life? Or maybe, when good things happen, are you always waiting on the other shoe to drop or kind of receive them as evidence of your father's goodness? Or are you just thinking, ah, this is too good to be true, I know that something bad is going to happen. Do you hesitate to ask God with help in material areas of your life, your finances and resources, that you need the fulfillment of a dream, believing that he's kind of too busy with spiritual matters or that those things are not as important? Do you believe that God might be withholding things in order to teach you a lesson? Again, something we know is just not true.
Speaker 1:What about areas of personal growth and maturity? Are you viewing the spiritual disciplines in your life as these religious obligations that you got to do in order to stay on God's good side, in order to have God's favor, or do you see them as opportunities to connect with the Father and walk in the freedom that's already yours in Christ? And what about when challenges come up? Is your first instinct to try harder and make it happen, or is it to lean more deeply into your identity and relationship with God and ask Him for wisdom? What about when you're seeing weakness in your life? Do you see that weakness as evidence of your-unquote you know unworthiness in your own mind or are you seeing those opportunities as opportunities for God's strength to be displayed and to be made perfect in your weakness, as his word says and you know? Do you find yourself being more motivated by fear of failure or by love of your father? Now listen, I got a few more questions here, but if you're like most people, I hope that you're starting to say, wow, some of these are really ringing my bell. I can see how the way that I'm perceiving life is not necessarily based in the truth of God's word. It's probably more based on my experience.
Speaker 1:What about things about repentance? You know, repentance is not something to be feared, nothing to make you feel bad. Repentance is actually a gift that gives you the grace to shift your perspective from your perspective to God's perspective in your life, right? So when you sin, do you hide from God or are you quickly running to him? Do you see repentance as a way to avoid punishment or as a way to maintain intimate connection with the father After confessing things to the Lord, do you feel really heavy and guilty and shameful, like you want to hide, like Adam and Eve did? Or do you, you know, you're able to really accept God's love and his forgiveness and move forward in strength? Or do you believe you know, like a lot of people do again well-meaning, that I got to make this up to God, I got to do penance, you know, after I've sinned, versus being able to walk in the full participation of the life that he's given you in Christ?
Speaker 1:What about you know the way, even the way you approach God? Are you approaching God with hesitation and fear or with confidence and joy? When you're praying, do you spend more time apologizing to him or expressing gratitude and childlike trust and faith, just to step out in incredible things? Do you believe that God's in a good mood towards you based on changes in your performance, or that he just loves you outright, no matter who you are, what you do? And do you believe that your relationship with God is based primarily on duty or delight, delighting yourself in him? And again, what about your kingdom identity, you know? Are you seeing yourself as a servant trying to please God, or as his son and daughter, who is already pleased God by just being who he created you to be and working alongside of him to see his kingdom coming, as will be done in and through your life.
Speaker 1:Maybe you believe you're mostly a disappointment to God rather than a delight to God. When you're reading scripture, do you look primarily for rules to follow or for revelation of your father's heart and his heart toward you? And maybe the last one do you think you need to get special permission to access God's power and authority, or do you recognize it as yours, as an inheritance and as a gift from the Lord? Listen, all these questions and so much more of the work that we do inside the Foundations course is not an inventory for you to be like. Well, let me just figure out everything I'm doing wrong and this kind of inventory of condemnation? No, no way. God is not. He never leads us to condemnation. He's always leading us to illumination. Right, the Holy Spirit is always there and I'm there with you to help you recognize areas of your life that you can grow into a more complete understanding of your identity in Christ and who you are, not only as His child, but who you are as an artist in His kingdom and my friend, I hope, after years maybe, of you listening to this podcast, maybe reading my books being a part of the things that we do. I hope you realize that my heart is to make sure that we're providing resources and frameworks for you to be able to walk in, to not just feel better but actually do better, to be able to see and experience lasting transformation in your life as you learn how the kingdom of God operates and as you learn to walk inside of the framework for kingdom living that God lays out in his word.
Speaker 1:Listen, my friend, I would be remiss to say that I know that probably the vast, vast, vast majority of you we have thousands upon thousands of people that listen to the podcast. Majority of you, we have thousands upon thousands of people that listen to the podcast. Most of you have not taken advantage of being a part of the Foundations course. When we did a cohort a couple of months ago and this was a new release course, you know we had hundreds of people that came in, saw incredible things happen in their life during this process. But I'll be honest with you my heart aches because I know that there are thousands upon thousands of you that are listening not only today, but maybe in years to come you'll hear this as well and you've not gone through this process that's been proven to unlock the hearts of artists, to allow you to be able to experience the grace and the power of God in your life, to be able to ditch you know inadequacy and fear and overwhelm and all that kind of stuff, and really step into the confidence that Jesus has for you in your life as an artist in his kingdom. And so, listen, I'm going to do something that I rarely, rarely do.
Speaker 1:I put a link here in this podcast episode just for my podcast listeners. And this is a special, big, big, big discount to be a part of the foundations course.
