SPEAKER_00:Have you ever wanted to have someone in your life who you could ask real questions about your art, your business, and even your walk with the Lord? Well, that's exactly what we do every Friday here on Five Minute Mentoring, where I answer one question from one of my awesome podcast listeners in order to help you start really thriving as the artist you know God created you to be. Hey, my friends. So glad that you're with me today here on 5-Minute Mentoring. Listen, I want to give you five quick tips to grow your art business. And listen, these may seem like, gosh, I know some of these, but these are super, super important. They're the fundamentals when it comes to building your art business into that faithful income stream that you know that God has for you as you pursue your calling in the kingdom as an artist. The first thing I would say is, number one, you have to embrace the fact that you are both an artist and an entrepreneur at the same time. You can't have the luxury, none of us have the luxury of just thinking that we're going to stay in the studio all day and somehow our work is going to magically sell. If you're wanting to grow an art business, you've got to embrace the fact that, hey, I got to be a business owner. I got to learn how business works. I got to be able to have the confidence and know how to take my art into the marketplace and sell it at the same time that I'm creating my art and developing my unique voice and creating work. that I love. So you got to have that two-sided understanding of being both an artist and an entrepreneur. Tip number two, I would say, is that you've then got to define success in the season that you're in. Did you know that every art business looks different, just like every art expression looks different? And so your art business and the success in your season doesn't have to look like mine, doesn't have to look like anybody else's. What is the unique thing that God's called you to do? What does success look like for you right now? How much money do you want to make? How much time do you want to be spending? What other things do you want to be doing in your life that are equally as important or maybe even more important than your art? And define what success looks like on your terms. Let the Holy Spirit lead you. Look realistically at where you are in your life and what success can and could look like for you as an artist. When you do that, it's going to be a lot easier to make plans and start developing your art business in a way that serves you. Number three, I would say this, nothing happens magically. You've got to be willing to invest in your journey as an artist. I love that scripture where David says, I will not offer the Lord that which costs me nothing. Everything that the Lord shows us as opportunity to step into, our dreams and the visions that he's given us, our purpose that we have in our heart, it all comes as an opportunity, an open door for us to do what? For us to step through by faith. And so what does that require? Well, that requires time. It requires focus. It requires your energy to be able to say yes to the right things, no to the wrong things. But here's the deal. It also costs money. You're going to need to invest money in classes, in materials, in learning from a mentor, in going to conferences, in doing whatever it is that you need to do in order to learn. You've got to be willing to invest. And if you're somebody that's just kind of waiting on everything to happen for you or to you, I promise you, you're going to slow down your development as an artist and slow down the development of your art business. But when you're again to happen in your art business. Number four is this. Do more of what you're great at and hire to your weaknesses. That is, find people that can help you do the things that you're not great at. I'll be the first one to tell you, I'm not an accountant. I'm not a great bookkeeper. I hate doing taxes and all that sort of thing. So you know what? Even early on when I didn't have two pennies to rub together hardly when I was starting out my art business, I found a way to have a And so guess what? Doing that and then graduating to an accountant and a CPA and having them do my taxes over the years, guess what? That took all of that pressure off of me and allowed me to do the thing that I'm great at, which is what? making art and connecting with people and doing those things. So if you will find people either part-time or trade with them, or maybe there's something that you can do for them, they can do for you. Whatever it is, find a way to get help in the areas that you need help in so that you can focus on doing the things that you're great at. If you spend tons and tons of time and energy trying to figure out things that you know you're never going to be great at, you know you don't have a passion for, it's going to be a huge, huge waste of time and energy suck for you. And it's going to show up in your art. All right. And then lastly, I would say this. You got to treat your art business like a business. I always tell my students in the mentoring program, you can't have business dreams with hobby habits. If you want to have an art business, you got to treat it like a business. You need to set it up as a business. You need to have a business bank account. You need to take your finances seriously. You need to take your business infrastructure seriously. And listen, lest that freak you out and you think, oh, I can't do that. I'm just an artist. I'm not a business person. This is just a hobby. Listen, If that's one of those things that you need help in, then get help. That's why I started the mentoring program. We've got artists from all over the world. I would bet you 99% of them said, yep, I suck at business. I'm afraid of business. I don't know how to do this. But guess what? They got the help that they needed and they're starting to sell and they're starting to grow their businesses. They're getting commissions and they're doing shows and they're online. And all of a sudden, magically appears a growing art business. No, it's not magic. It's because they started treating their art business Like a business because they got the help they needed because they started defining success for themselves in the season that they're in. They were willing to invest in their journey and they started embracing the fact that they're both an artist and an entrepreneur. Listen, if you do those five things, I promise you, your art business will begin to blossom and grow into all that God has for you. I love you, my friend. If I can be a blessing to you in any way, check out the resources that are right here in the show notes. notes so that you can take the next step and start thriving as the artist that God created you to be. I love you, friend. Remember, until next time, you were created to thrive. All right, bye.
