336 - 5-Minute Mentoring: How To Heal Your Heart From Shame
What sort of garment are you wearing?
No, I’m not asking whether you’re wearing shorts or a dress or jeans or a pocket t-shirt. If you’re wearing white after Labor Day or socks with Crocs…no judgment here.
What I’m really asking is whether you’re wearing the Garment of Praise or the Garment of Shame.
Shame is heavy. Shame drags us down. Shame is a burden that colors our experiences, our interactions, and our relationship with the Lord.
The Lord tells us to put on the Garment of Praise and praise Him in all things, but it can be hard to do that if you’re weighed down by the Garment of Shame. The antidote to shame is praise! Hallelujah!
In this episode of 5-Minute Mentoring, I’ll tell you about the false comfort of shame and how you can escape from the burden of its weight so you can experience joy, fulfillment, clarity, and love.
When you discover how to cast off the Garment of Shame and put on the Garment of Praise, your life will never be the same!

SPEAKER_00:God created you to be. Well, hey, my friend, I hope you're doing well. Welcome to another episode of 5-Minute Mentoring. I hope these are a big blessing to you. I just love being able to come and share just some little tidbits with you on a weekly basis that are hopefully making your life and art business and just the way that you live easier and more effective and closer to the Lord. You know, I was sitting with the Lord this morning and just, you know, dealing with some things in my own heart and as Holy Spirit always does and He's always bringing up things that you think, man, I thought I dealt with that before. Anyway, I was thinking about the topic of shame, and I was just asking the Lord about that. And as I closed my eyes and was praying about that, listening for his voice, I saw myself with this huge kind of wet blanket overcoat, if you will. And the further I walked in that thing, the more heavy it got and heavy it got and heavy it got. And I was like, what is that, Lord? And he said, that's the garment of shame. And he said, when you wear the garment of shame, it's like this wet blanket that gets more heavier and heavier and heavier. And you know what? As I began to think about that, I was like, oh, I can totally relate to that. At times in my life when the enemy wants to bring shame and fear and anxiety, you know, a lot of times we like to wallow. If you're honest, we like to kind of, as we say in the South, wallow in those feelings and just kind of roll around in them. And, you know, we kind of think we get comfort from that. But in reality, it becomes this huge wet blanket that becomes debilitating and it becomes, you know, what we thought was comfortable and safe really is just giving us the illusion of safety. But, you know, there's a beautiful thing that the Bible does is it gives us antidotes for shame and fear and anxiety. And, you know, in Isaiah 61, it talks about putting on the garment You know, the garment of praise can be exchanged. We don't have to have that garment of shame anymore. We can take that off. We can give that to Jesus. And what does that mean? That means you can literally close your eyes in your mind's eye and just say, Jesus, I take off this shame. I take off this anxiety. I take off this fear by faith. And God, I choose to put on the garment of praise. See, everything in the kingdom is already given to you by grace. Health, provision, life, joy, peace, it's all given to you by grace, but we have to access it or appropriate it by faith. And so that's why it's important when the Bible says, put on the garment of praise. We have to put on that garment that is a gift from Jesus. And we put it on. And guess what? I love it in Isaiah 61. It says this. It says, That is, you begin to thank God for who he is, for what he's done for you, the times he's brought you through, the times he's provided for you, all the blessings that he's given you in your life. Guess what? Joy is the natural result from that, and it drives out shame and fear and insecurity, and it heals your heart. And it renews vision and it starts to restore hope. And the beautiful thing, just like it says there in Isaiah 61, it establishes you with deep roots that are founded in the love of God. So many times, shame and fear and anxiety, the reason they come upon us, number one, the attack of the enemy, but number two, our roots are grounded in places that were never designed to give us life. What does that mean? That means what people think about me, what I think about myself, all of my past trauma and woundedness, all of my own ability to try to make it and grind it out and make it happen in my life. That was never God's intent for you to be able to live your life. God's best for you and God's best for me is that our roots be grounded, rooted and grounded in love, the Bible says. That's God's best for our root. That's God's best for our life. And when you will put on actively the garment of praise and take off actively the garment of shame, you will begin to see your roots go deep. You'll begin to see yourself able to move through difficulty in your life without going on the roller coaster of despair that so many artists go through every day and just think it's normal. My friend, it's not normal and it's definitely not God's best for you. The There's a better way. It's called the kingdom of God, and it's available, living, and active in you right now if you know Jesus as your Savior. You know, if you're somebody that's listening to this right now, maybe you've been listening to the podcast for a while, and you've been hearing me talk about the kingdom of God and what's available in the kingdom of God to us as believers, and you think, man, gosh, this sounds too good to be true. I've never heard the gospel presented like this. I've never heard the Christian life presented like this. I just want to say, you know, you may have heard Another gospel, a gospel of religion, a gospel of performance, a gospel of trying to make it happen on your own and be good enough somehow to please God. But listen, Jesus came to this earth and he died a sinner's death and he rose on the third day and conquered death, hell and the grave so that you and I could be both redeemed. That is all of our sins forgiven, the slate washed clean, our account completely washed clean and forgiven. Not only that, not only so that we could have eternal life with Him, not only that we would be born again, but also that we would be restored. Restored to what? Restored to the original intent that the Father had for us when He created us, when He thought of us and dreamed us up before the very foundation of the earth. You know that God's got a purpose and a plan for your life, and it's through the redemption of your soul and through the restoration of you into the kingdom that you can walk in the fullness that God has for you. My friend, if you've never experienced that before and something's waking up in your heart right now going, well, I want that. I want to step into that. Then my friend, I just want to invite you to pray a simple prayer with me. Just say, Jesus, I know that I'm a sinner. I know that you love me, that you came to the earth and that you died for me, and that you rose again on the third day and conquered death, hell, and the grave just for me. Jesus, would you come into my heart? I want to make you my Lord and my Savior. I repent of my sins. Wash me clean and fill me with your Holy Spirit so that I can walk as your son and as your daughter for all of my days and for all of eternity. Amen. Listen, my friend, if you just prayed that prayer with me, I believe you got born again. And I believe that the Holy Spirit right now instantaneously is living and active now inside of you at every promise of God. Every promise of God is available to you right now by faith. I want to encourage you to get into a Bible believing church, a church that loves God, that loves worship, that loves his presence. I want to invite you to continue to connect with us here at the Thriving Christian Artists and all the incredible things that we have for artists who are following Jesus and going after all he has for you in the kingdom. And listen, begin to listen for his voice, begin to read his word, begin to invite into your life and you will begin to see your life change in an incredible, incredible way. If you did that today, my friend, please let me know that you got born again. Listen, nothing would give me greater joy than to know that. Let me know on Facebook or Instagram or YouTube or on the podcast. Email us, whatever you need to do. And I love you. I'm so glad that you're a part of this movement of artists that God's raising up all over the world. Until next time, Until next time, remember you were created to thrive. Bye. Hey, my friend, it's Matt. Listen, real quick before you go, I wanted to let you know that we've just launched the website for our 2022 Gathering of Artisans conference. I know, can you believe it? I'm like, I'm so ready to get back together in person. And listen, the website's got all the details about this year's workshops and speakers and more. Listen, if you've never been to Gathering of Artisans, all I can say is there is nothing like it in the world. Imagine three full days of creating in the studio with other Christian artists and Being taught by master artists who not only love Jesus, but are super talented and anointed artists and teachers and everything from painting and jewelry to fiber art and writing, mixed media, glass, and a whole lot more. It's over 40 different workshops to choose from. And if that weren't enough, imagine them ending each day with powerful times of worship in God's presence and inspirational messages for creatives from leaders like my friend, Alan Arnold, who's been right here on the podcast. with me several times. He's the author of The Story of With and other books that you'll know. Also, my friend Luke Allsbrook, who is a renowned artist and has an incredible story of how God's led him through his life as an artist. And even little old me, I'll be there as well, sharing with you each night in leading worship. Listen, all of that wrapped up in four days of community and connection with other Christian artists here in the mountains of Western North Carolina at the beautiful Ridgecrest Conference Center. Now, like I said, all the details about this conference are on our website at gatheringofartisans.com. And since this event almost always sells out, I want to encourage you to go ahead and pre-register.
