358 - 5-Minute Mentoring: The Key To Becoming A Full-Time Artist
What’s the one question I hear most frequently? (Other than “Would you like fries with that?” What can I say - we’ve been traveling a lot lately! 😆)
It’s probably some form of: "How do you go from being a hobby or part-time artist to being able to do art full-time?"
This can definitely feel like a massive leap, especially for folks who are currently working a more traditional 40 hour/week job.
So how artists make this transition, you ask? The answer is simple: regulated cash flow.
Regulated cash flow is a consistent, predictable, monthly stream (or streams!) of revenue from your art business that allows you to pay the bills, pay yourself, grow your business, and do the thing that God is calling you to do…
…without having to worry all the time about whether you're making money.
But how exactly do you leverage your art to create regulated cash flow? Check out this episode of 5-Minute Mentoring and I’ll tell you!
And when you’re ready to build a business that helps you thrive spiritually, artistically, and financially? Here are 4 ways I can help:

Well, hey, my friend, I get this question all the time. Matt, how do I take my art business from just a hobby and being an emerging artist to actually being able to quit my job and do this thing full-time? Well, there really is only one big differentiating factor between somebody that's doing their art as a hobby, just kind of what I call an ENT artist every now and then, and somebody that's really able to do it on a full-time or serious part-time basis. I'm going to tell you what that is today here on 5-Minute Mentoring.

SPEAKER_00:Have you ever wanted to have someone in your life who you could ask real questions about your art, your business, and even your walk with the Lord? Well, that's exactly what we do every Friday here on 5-Minute Mentoring, where I answer one question from one of my awesome podcast listeners in order to help you start really thriving as the artist you know God created you to be. Hey, my friends, I hope you are wondering like a lot of people are, what is that differentiator? What is that thing that really would allow me to take what is maybe a hobby for you or a part-time endeavor into doing something that's more of a serious part-time thing or maybe even full-time and transfer out of the job that you've been in into actually being able to do your art full-time? Well, the number one differentiator, bar none, regardless, is not does Jesus love them more? is not even the talent or whatever that they may have or even their marketing ability necessarily. You know what it is? It's regulated cash flow. What does that mean? Well, regulated cash flow, the way I define it, is this consistent stream of income that is coming into your business every month. So much so that you can count on it. It becomes predictable so that you can what? You can pay yourself. You can pay your bills. You can grow your business. You can do the thing that God's called you to do and you're not sitting there wondering every month, am I going to make money or am I not? Now, the question is, well, how do I do that? Well, that's one of the things that I love to teach. In fact, that's one of the big focuses we teach inside the mentoring program is how do you, over time, begin to build regulated cash flow in your business? Suffice it to say, I can't teach all of you that right here in five minutes, but one of the things that I'm really passionate about helping artists understand is that you have to begin to have multiple streams of income. And to have multiple streams of income, you have to have multiple streams of marketing. That means you're doing multiple things on a monthly basis all throughout the year that allow you to not only tell your story and connect authentically with prospects and partners and clients, but also give them opportunities to buy. How many of you, and I know I was like this for a long time, you had that one show, that one social media platform, that one strategic partner, that one thing that you've done for years, years this worked until It doesn't. And when it doesn't, then it's really, really bad. That may be because of seasonality. That may be because of economic changes. That may be because of pandemics. That may be because you move. Lots and lots of different reasons. But you know, the beautiful thing is when you begin to develop multiple streams of income and then multiple streams of marketing that bring that income, you build stability in your business. That is the differentiator between somebody that's able to get over the hump of just doing their art as a hobby versus somebody that's actually able to do it in a serious part-time or full-time sort of way. Bottom line is, unless you have that, you're going to be frustrated and you're going to be constantly be on this roller coaster up and down of income, never able to bring a solid, predictable income in your business. But once you do, listen, it is so much fun because you start realizing, hey, all the work that I'm putting in is pay off. Now I've got the time. Now I've got the money. Now I've got the focus to be able to do the thing that God's called me to be and do as an artist in his kingdom. And it all is based on regulated cash flow. That is that consistent stream of income. Now, there's a whole lot to developing over that. I mean, part of that is learning to price your art. Part of that is learning to develop a unique voice. Part of that is learning to what marketing opportunities are out there and how to best leverage those. Part of that is learning to to develop strategic partners. Part of that is learning how to engage with clients and prospects online and develop connection. You say, Matt, that is so overwhelming. There's a lot. I know. Wouldn't it be nice if somebody actually created a pathway for that where you didn't have to think about it? We did. It's called the Created to Thrive Artist Mentoring Program. Listen, you may have been thinking about the mentoring program for a long time and just never pulled the trigger. I want to encourage you to do it because instead of trying to figure all this stuff out by yourself, You can allow me to become your mentor. Ask me questions every week. Let me walk with you along the journey and get the benefit of being in an incredible global community of artists all over the world who are going after the same things that you are, that regulated cash flow in their business so that they can do the things that God's called them to do as artists in the kingdom. Listen, my friend, there's a link right here. You can find it all about the mentoring program. Become a member. I would love to help you on your next journey. next steps on your journey as you become the artist that God's called you to be. Regardless if you become a member or not, and I hope you do because you don't have to struggle by yourself, make sure that you're developing that regulated cash flow in your business so that you can have the time and the money that you need to do the things that God's called you to do. Love you, my friend. Remember, until next time, you were created to thrive. All right, bye. Hey, my friend, listen, I'm really excited to let you know about a special opportunity that we've not done in a long time. And it's something that I'm super excited about. It's called the Unlocking the Heart of the Artist Conference. You know, when I first wrote Unlocking the Heart of the Artist, it resonated with artists around the world because so many of us were dealing with what I now call subconscious obstructions, these things that get lodged inside of our heart that become a barrier or a roadblock to us walking in everything that God has for us as artists and as kingdom people. And unless we are able to cooperate with the Holy Spirit in a real intentional way and allow Him to heal those parts of us, we walk in places that God never intended us to walk. We walk in struggles that God had never intended us to walk in, and we never experience the victory and the breakthrough that Jesus designed for us when He died on the cross and promised us that we'd live an abundant life. And so the unlocking the heart of the art is an opportunity to pull away and intentionally work through these issues in the context of a loving, safe Christian community with other artists and leaders who are on the same path to healing and wholeness that you are, who want to walk into everything that God has for them in the kingdom and walk out of all the things that have held them bound. If you've known me for very long, you know that healing the hearts of artists is really my passion. It's at the core of everything we're about and all the things that we do at our conference and mentoring program and all the things that we're about. But this weekend in particular, if I could describe it in one word, I would say experiential. This is not going to be a typical talking heads conference. This is going to be an opportunity for you to hear incredibly anointed teaching that becomes a roadmap for you to do work right inside the conference, not only with between you and the Lord, but also with you and other folks that are around tables that you can have meaningful discussions with in a addition to experiential opportunities to actually use art as a processing methodology to be able to process the things that God's speaking to you, the things that you're letting go, the things that you're planting in your heart. I'm also super excited to be welcoming my friend Mark DeJesus, as well as my friend Dr. Darlene Mayo and others who will be with us to help facilitate these healing encounters with the Lord. I'm going to be leading worship with some of my friends as well as teaching. It's going to be an experiential encounter with each other and with the Holy Spirit. And I can't wait to see you there. Listen, all the details are right here below at the link. You can just click that, find out when registration opens, which is really soon, as well as all the details about the conference. Little bit of a note. This is going to be not a weekend conference. It's actually going to be a Tuesday night, all day Wednesday and Thursday through lunch. Don't freak out. That's why God made vacation time. And so we're giving you plenty of time to go ahead and plan that out. out so that you can get babysitters, get off work, make travel plans, all the things you need to do to make it a priority to be here for the Unlocking the Heart of the Artist conference. I love you, my friend. If God's pulling on your heart, tugging on your heart right now to say you need to be there, do everything you can to be with us and join us for Unlocking the Heart of the Artist coming up in November 2022. All right, see you then. Bye.
