344 - 5-Minute Mentoring: 5 Reasons Every Artist Should Be Using Canva To Market Their Art
Back in the day, when I was working on staff at churches, I was the “creative guy” - which meant that I was the default graphic designer of the group!
Now, truth be told, this was NOT my area of expertise, but I dove into Adobe Photoshop and slogged my way through it. Let’s just say that it was…a challenge. 😆
Luckily, technology has come a long way since then, and tools like Canva make it MUCH easier for artists and business owners like us to create top-notch, professional marketing materials, from social media graphics to flyers to rack cards…and so much more!
On this episode of 5-Minute Mentoring, I’m sharing 5 reasons why you NEED to be using Canva to support you in the creation of graphics for marketing your art business!

SPEAKER_00:Have you ever wanted to have someone in your life who you could ask real questions about your art, your business, and even your walk with the Lord? Well, that's exactly what we do every Friday here on Five Minute Mentoring, where I answer one question from one of my awesome podcast listeners in order to help you start really thriving as the artist you know God created you to be. Hey, my friend. So glad that you are here with me on 5-Minute Mentoring. You know, years ago when I first started working in churches as a worship pastor, I was the creative guy on staff and I got forced into kind of the graphic design role. And so years ago, learned a program that's been out there for years called Adobe Photoshop. And when I first started learning that, oh my gosh, it was so huge. And it's gotten a lot, lot bigger nowadays. I mean, we're talking over 20 years ago when I first started using that, when you had to get a C sent to you and install it on your computer with the ID key. You remember all that? Well, listen, it was crazy, but those graphic design skills have become invaluable for me over the years as I've learned to get my art out there, be an artist, start my own art business, be an entrepreneur, especially in the online world. Even with things like developing postcards and flyers for my classes or business cards, rack cards, things like that. Well, as I started mentoring artists I realized that not everybody had that same graphic design experience for me. And it started to be a real barrier for a lot of artists in order to have really great marketing materials. And for years, you know, I would recommend Adobe, Photoshop and Illustrator and InDesign and all their suite of products. And I still do. They're great. But a few years ago, a tool came online called Canva.com and it changed everything. And I just wanted to let you know, if you're not used to it, using Canva right now as an artist, you are missing the boat. And I want to give you a couple of reasons why. Number one, Canva is what's called template-based. And so if you are looking for, for example, a business card, a postcard, a flyer, an online presentation, a video, a meme on social media, an advertisement of any kind, a header graphic for your Facebook covers or cover graphics for your YouTube videos or I mean anything that you can think of Canva I guarantee you already has a template there that looks fabulous has great fonts and images already chosen and all you have to do is just plug and play you put your text and pictures in there and boom you've got a great looking product number two you can design all your own things there if you just want to kind of start from scratch you can design things of any size any kind of resolution right there online and and put that in any kind of platform that you need. Number three, it's great because it's web-based. How many times have I been sitting there thinking of a Facebook post early in the morning and during my quiet time, and I think, you know what, I want to do a meme for this real quick. I literally just copy and paste something that I put on Facebook, open my Canva app on my phone, pop it in there, make a great meme, choose a piece of stock photography that's already built into Canva, and we'll Within five minutes, I've got a great-looking professional meme to put out with my Facebook post or Instagram post that I've already done. Number four. It's all online. And so you can access all of the historical documents that you've created. They're all there for you. So it's not like, where did I put that picture? And did I save that on an external hard drive? Or is it on that computer? Is it on my laptop or iPad? It's all right there. Number next, and I mean, I could just be talking about it forever. Number next, it is designed for people who have no clue what they're doing. And I don't know if you're like me, but sometimes technology can be over overwhelming especially if you've not ever done any kind of graphic design before and so if you need like hand holding 101 never done this before but need to have great looking graphics canva is absolutely a tool that you should be using so listen i don't get anything off of this there's no affiliate link there's no nothing i'm just telling you this because i think it's a tool that every artist should have in your um you know bag of tricks if you will to be marketing your business because you are equally an artist and an entrepreneur. And I'm just going to say it straight. If you've got crappy looking graphics, nobody's going to pay attention to you online. That's just the way it is. And so learn the tools, learn Canva, begin to use it and make your work stand out online. Get the attention of the people who are looking to purchase art like yours online. You'll be so glad you did. All right. Listen, if you start creating image images online, like on Instagram or Facebook, tag us at the Thriving Christian Artist. And I would love to see what you create on Canva and just kind of celebrate the fact that you're actually using what I told you to use. All right. So tag me and I'll see you next time. Until then, remember, you were created to thrive. All right. Bye. Hey, my friend, it's Matt.
